WoodGreen’s Immigrant Services Unit is a one-stop, holistic settlement service provider for newcomers to Canada, including refugees. We offer:
1. Housing Help
WoodGreen, along with the donated services of Deloitte and the Konrad Group have come together to create a new online portal to match refugees in need with offers of housing, goods and services. The Housing Opportunities & Marketplace Exchange (H.O.M.E) portal allows donors - both businesses and individuals - to post available housing, goods and services to help refugees arriving in Toronto. Click here for more information.
We provide information on available affordable housing, match refugees with available housing opportunities based on their needs, negotiate with landlords, help with completing applications for social housing, advise on housing issues, educate clients about their rights as tenants, and do follow up.
2. Language Training We offer free English classes from basic to advanced levels with a flexible schedule. On-site childminding service and TTC tokens are available for eligible participants. English conversation circles are also available at WoodGreen and local libraries in East Toronto for newcomers to practice their English conversation skills and to enhance their cultural knowledge and skills about Canada.
3. Settlement Support for Individuals and Families We provide Refugees with settlement guidance and information through one-on-one and group sessions. Our programs ensure that our clients have accurate information about how “things work in Canada” from housing, language, education, employment, healthcare, legal services to government supports. We also ensure that our clients are connected to resources through referrals to any appropriate government and community agencies. WoodGreen offers support for newcomer youth including leadership training, social activities, job search help and homework clubs. We support newcomer parents by providing children and parenting programs.
4. Employment Support We provide job search support to newcomers, occupation-specific language training for internationally-trained professionals in IT, Health Care, Finance/Accounting and Office Administration. Our clients benefit from software training, placements, mentorship and connection to employers. In addition, we offer social and cultural integration programs to help newcomers connect to communities, make new friends, build their network and learn more about Canadian workplace cultures. Every year, we help nearly 8,000 immigrants and their families settle into their new lives in Canada. Our wide range of free services are offered in-person and online.
